Butterfly Villa

Puttalam, Sri Lanka

The villa is a family retreat, located in the tropical island of Sri Lanka.  The conceptual inspiration derives from the many varieties of butterflies indigenous to the country.  It was utilized for not only the aesthetics, but also for the structural quality of the roof appropriated from the composition of a butterfly’s wings. Its characteristics were studied and incorporated in the three-bedroom house along with the engagement of the program local building culture of having deep set verandahs. The villa is made up of a four-quadrant design that utilizes symmetry and repetition of components to facilitate an ease of construction while maintaining elegance. The design reflects local traditions of cross ventilation and a shaded perimeter, allowing openness to the outside during the day and an internal focus during the evening hours.  This mix of vernacular and contemporary elements blend effectively to demonstrate the potential for luxury living with local design values.
